Things to do near Playa Mujeres
An away-day on Isla Mujeres
Sail to Isla Mujeres. Go on a tour with a stop for snorkelling in the clear waters of the Mexican Caribbean. Then head to a private beach club on Isla Mujeres. Enjoy a buffet lunch spread and have time to hang out at North Beach or go shopping downtown. Tours include a buffet lunch and drinks, and use of snorkel equipment.
Before arriving to Isla Mujeres, you can enjoy some snorkelling at El Farito or Manchones Reef. You will get all the equipment you need for this activity. Admire the incredible underwater world.
If you prefer to make your own way, a ferry from Cancun is around $30 return. You can rent a golf cart $40+ for the day to tour the island. Have lunch by the lighthouse
What fascinates us about Mayan ruins? In 2006, USA Today, declared Chichen Itza to be among the new wonders of the world. View the list of ancient and modern wonders here.
The complex of Chichen Itza includes the massive step pyramid, El Castillo, or Temple of Kukulcan. This ancient city thrived from around 600 CE. to the 1200s.
Graphic stone carvings survive at the Ball Court, Temple of the Warriors, and the Wall of the Skulls. Sound-and-light shows illuminate the buildings every night.
An unusual event happens on the Spring Equinox (20th March), and again on the Autumn Equinox (22nd September). The sun’s rays create a shadow across the Kukulcan Pyramid. This gives the illusion of a snake slithering down the staircase.
Chichen Itza is a 2 to 3-hour drive from Cancun on the Merida road. Tours are available.
This is the ruins that the tour guide never told you about! If the 3-hour drive and big crowds are too much to consider a visit to Chichen Itza, then try the local equivalent. El Meco is on a much smaller scale, but no less impressive.
When you stay at the Atelia Playa Mujeres, take a 10-minute taxi ride, or perhaps a 45-minute walk (about 4K), and spend an hour at El Meco.
The layout is large and peaceful, almost spiritual. You can sit in the shade and watch the birds and iguanas. You may have the place to yourself. There are no tour guides here, and the terrain does not suit wheelchairs, but there are restroom facilities.
Casa Del Buceo – Diving in Cancun
This highly regarded dive centre on Isla Mujeres owns the TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence.
Casa del Buceo pride themselves in their exceptional customer service. The dive center covers PADI certifications and many activities. These include; snorkelling, whale-shark tours (May to September), pleasure trips, a reef dive, an adventure dive, and a night dive. There is discovery scuba for beginners, open water course, advanced open water course, rescue course, and private tours.
The scuba diving could take in perhaps 4 locations; Manchones, El Farito, the underwater sculpture museum (MUSA), and the reef. You will see an abundance of sea life at all the locations, and MUSA is fascinating.
MUSA, created by English sculptor Jason de Caires Taylor lies off the western coast of Isla Mujeres. Isla Mujeres is also home to a population of sea turtles.
These dives are for those who like to take their time admiring the beautiful reef gardens and observing sea life activity. There are displays of turtles, lobster, barracudas, parrot fish, sea urchins, sea spiders, starfish and more!
Make sure you buy and wear biodegradable (reef safe) sunscreen, to protect the fragile ecosystem.
